Hey team, Coach Thomas here. Whether you’re tightening the reins in a barrel race or crushing a HIIT session, the engine that keeps you moving is the same – muscle. And the fuel that repairs and builds that muscle is protein. Let’s break down exactly how much you need, when to grab it, and why it matters for every rider and active adult.
WHY PROTEIN MATTERS
Protein provides the amino acids your body uses to repair microscopic tears that happen every time you saddle up, sprint, or lift. Without enough of it, recovery stalls, fatigue creeps in, and performance plateaus. For riders, strong core and leg muscles translate directly into better balance, quicker cues, and less chance of injury during those fast turns in the arena.
HOW MUCH PROTEIN
The sweet spot for most active adults is 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. If you’re regularly competing or doing heavy strength work, aim toward the upper end. A 70‑kg rider would need roughly 84‑112 grams of protein daily.
CALCULATE YOUR TARGET
Take your weight in pounds, divide by 2.2 to get kilograms, then multiply by 1.4 (the midpoint). Example: 150 lb ÷ 2.2 ≈ 68 kg × 1.4 ≈ 95 g of protein each day. Write that number on a sticky note and keep it in your gym bag – it’s your daily goal.
WHEN TO TAKE IT
Timing isn’t magic, but spreading protein across the day improves muscle protein synthesis. Aim for 20‑30 g of high‑quality protein every 3‑4 hours. That means a protein‑rich breakfast, a mid‑morning snack, lunch, an afternoon bite, dinner, and possibly a light bedtime option.
PRE‑WORKOUT
A small serving (15‑20 g) 30‑60 minutes before riding helps supply amino acids during the session. Greek yogurt, a whey shake, or a handful of nuts with fruit work well and won’t weigh you down in the saddle.
POST‑WORKOUT
Your muscles are most receptive for about 45 minutes after activity. Consume 20‑30 g of fast‑digesting protein – a whey shake, chocolate milk, or a turkey wrap – paired with some carbs to replenish glycogen.
DAILY DISTRIBUTION
Sample day for a 150‑lb rider:
• Breakfast: 2 eggs + whole‑grain toast (20 g)
• Snack: Greek yogurt + berries (15 g)
• Lunch: Grilled chicken salad (25 g)
• Pre‑ride: Small whey shake (15 g)
• Post‑ride: Protein bar + banana (20 g)
• Dinner: Salmon, quinoa, veggies (30 g)
Total ≈ 125 g – right on target.
THIS WEEK’S ACTION STEP
Pick ONE meal and add a protein boost to reach the 20‑30 g range. Write the new meal plan in your journal, and check off each protein‑rich bite you eat for the next seven days. You’ll see steadier energy, quicker recovery, and stronger rides.
KEEP PUSHING
Remember, consistency beats perfection. Stick to your protein target, fuel around your training, and watch your performance elevate. Ride hard, recover smarter, and keep the momentum rolling!
